By John Hartig:
A very successful
St. Valentine's Sweetheart Concert was held at the St. Anns Community Church on
the evening of February 14, 2004. The evening was planned as a special
treat for couples with the idea of combining dessert
with background music supplied by local musicians. The
Peninsula Orchestra played the "Sleeping Beauty Waltz"
and also the "Emperor Waltz", with a rousing Finale
in "Ballet Parisien." The brasses delighted listeners
with Duke Ellington's "Mood Indigo" and the Beatles'
"When I'm 64." The Peninsula Ensemble, a smaller group
within the orchestra, added variety to the program with
Scott Joplin's "Country Club Rag."
Niagara Falls harp player, Carol Farrar, graced intermission
time with the romantic strains from her harp. She has
been playing a little over a decade but her repertoire
includes her own original compositions, as well as a
range of classical and traditional folk melodies.
The music was easy listening and light. And while couples
at tables chatted quietly and listened to the background music
provided by local musicians, they were catered to by St. Anns
young people who served lots of cake, coffee and tea. This
was the second annual Valentine's Dessert Concert and it proved
again to be an enjoyable social evening for everybody: sweethearts
and friends.
A special thankyou has to go to the volunteers who
gave their time to organize this Sweetheart Concert
through various committees and to the church and the
orchestra who co-operated to make a positive event happen
within the community.
The Peninsula Orchestra plays music that
appeals to a wide range of tastes, from the standard
classical repertoire of Bach and Beethoven to the popular
melodies from musicals, such as "The Sound of Music"
or "My Fair Lady."
It's a community orchestra made up of volunteer musicians
from the Niagara Region. We rehearse every Monday night
in Fonthill, at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church. We
are always looking for clarinets, oboes, bassoons, and
strings of all kinds, especially cellos and violins.
